PREFACE.
that look to and tend toward the goal I have set for myself; that is, those things concerning which it is manifest from the Apostolic writings that the Pharisees disagreed with Christ, or contended against Him. I have also used discretion in citing the corruptions of the Papists. For I have followed the number, order, and kind of things that the antitheses of Pharisaism with Christianity suggested. And I have wished to be brief in refuting these fictions or corruptions, knowing that more has already been written by our side on this subject than can be read even by those who abound in leisure, and those things are also firmer and clearer than to be refuted by the flatterers of the Popes or the patrons of Papism. Therefore, it was enough for me to point out the wounds with a finger, and I trust that this will be enough at this time for all those who are teachable and desirous of knowing the truth. But as for quarrelsome prevaricators and those who are always learning but never arrive at the knowledge of the truth, no one—however learned or diligent—could satisfy them, let alone me.
I would also like to warn you, reader, that by the name of Pharisaism I understand that which is established first from Gospel history, then from other Apostolic writings, to be that which the Pharisees added to the Prophetic doctrine and by which they corrupted it, thus...
