should pursue those renowned studies of yours, both publicly and privately, and push for their success. I rejoice greatly in this, because I feel no small relief from the sorrows—which the calamities of the Church and the Republic repeatedly excite and exacerbate in my heart—whenever I observe ingenious Youth being illuminated by the illustrious gifts of God, the glory of doctrine and virtues, and being divinely instructed for great functions of office. For as long as I see that happening, that proverb will always be dear to me: God still looks upon us.
But it will benefit you greatly if, having convinced yourselves that the ἔργον work/task of your lives and studies is Piety, you direct all your studies toward the glory of God and the public utility as if toward a target, mindful of the very grave sentiment of the blessed Jerome: We are all cautious in the smallest things and negligent in the greatest. This happens because we do not know where true life is.
