For indeed, in order to persuade men that the doctrine they bring forth is that very one which is contained in the holy Scriptures, which was handed down by the Apostles and their first successors, which was once confirmed by miracles, and in short, which is true, they rely on no other thing than a single, and most empty, promise of true doctrine (just as the Manichaeans did in the past). They do not wish to compete with Catholics in their number, their antiquity, their integrity of life, or the miracles they themselves have performed, nor by any such title that could otherwise confer authority upon a doctrine. Rather, they demand that they be believed for this reason alone, because they propose, as they repeat, the most true doctrine. But how will those who cannot themselves discern the liquid truth of doctrine from so many errors (to speak with Augustine) be able to be led to believe prudently by the truth of the doctrine itself? For it will not be enough to perceive the truth in one or another, or only in some parts of the doctrine (which perhaps is not very difficult), so that you might decide that they are legitimate teachers in the true Church who embrace that particular truth, so to speak.
