HENRICI STEPHANI
this he says is worth the same as ἐξ ἑτοίμου λέγω I speak from the ready/extempore; he also explains it as ψεύδομαι I lie; and Κατασχεδιάζω I lie about someone likewise as καταψεύδομαι I slander. But in one old book, before Σχεδιάζω, one reads: Σχέδιον a draft, that which is not produced from contemplation. PHILIP. You complain not without cause about this examination of that word σχεδὸς, as not satisfying you; if, however, it is to be said that it is examined in any way at all. COR. Although σχεδογραφεῖν, not σχεδιογραφεῖν, is said here, I nevertheless believe that some meaning of "draft-writing" underlies that verb. To which point belong the things written in Henri Estienne’s Thesaurus about σχέδη and σχεδάριον. But whatever the meaning of τῦ σχεδογραφεῖν may be, it is clear that it was not introduced into the Greek language by Moschopoulos, even from what the scholiast of Hesiod writes, where he brings forward as an example the method of learning grammar that was in use in his time (and perhaps even long before). PH. You will make me happy if you produce that passage. For I am very eager to know how boys were taught grammar then. COR. You will be happy immediately, then, or rather, even now. For behold what he writes: Τυχὸν Perhaps (he says) τις ἐθέλει γραμματικὴν ἐπικτήσασθαι ἀρετὴν, καὶ ἐκ θεέως αὐτῆς γίνεται μέτοχος· ἀλλὰ πρότερον ἐκδίδωσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς στοιχειώδεσι γράμμασιν, εἶτα ταῖς συλλαβαῖς, καὶ τῇ λοιπῇ προπαιδείᾳ. ἔπειτα τῇ Διονυσίου βίβλῳ προσέχει καὶ τοῖς Θεοδοσίου κανόσι, καὶ ποιηταῖς. someone wishes to acquire grammatical excellence, and becomes a participant in it by divine grace; but first he gives himself over to the elemental letters, then to syllables, and to the rest of the preliminary education. Then he pays attention to the book of Dionysius and to the canons of Theodosius, and to the poets. After these things, however, he says that he applies himself to σχεδογραφίαν draft-composition. For he adds this: εἶτα σχεδογραφίας ἀπάρχεται καὶ πολλοῖς μογήσας τοῖς χρόνοις, μόλις τὴν γραμματικὴν ἀρετὴν ἐπικτᾶται. then he begins drafting, and after having labored for many years, he barely acquires grammatical excellence. PH. Are these things not read in any of those scholiasts of Hesiod who have been published? COR. By no means; but in one who is indeed in the number of them, but not yet edited. PH. Whence, therefore, did you have these? COR. From Isaac Casaubon; but Διονύσυ is wrongly written for Διονυσίῳ in the copy from which these were excerpted by him.
