DE VERITATIS ET PACIS

τῇ συζυγίᾳ in the union/yoke of Truth and Peace.

I. BASIS.

A decorative drop cap letter E depicts a floral motif.It is the intention of the mind, for the glory of our Lord JESUS CHRIST and the admonition of godly men, to explain in this Theological Disputation this noble exhortation of the Prophet Zechariah, Chapter 8, verse 19.

אֱמֶת וְשָׁלוֹם אֱהָבוּ Love Truth and Peace:

Greek Version.
Καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν, καὶ τὴν εἰρήνην ἀγαπήσατε And love both the truth and the peace.

Latin Version.
VERITATEM ET PACEM DILIGITE Love Truth and Peace.

II. PROBLEMA.

We ought to love TRUTH just as much as PEACE. Paul explained the sentiment of this problem most wisely and concisely when he said: Ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ But speaking the truth in love: Let us grow up in all things into Him who is the head, namely CHRIST. Ephesians 4:15. Truly, there is no one who conducts himself in love (whether you look at his words, his deeds, or the pattern of his entire life) unless his heart is sanctified by truth, that is, by the true Religion. John 17:17.

III. Ἔκθεσις τοῦ διδομένου Exposition of the given text.

That Truth exists, and that Peace exists, is beyond controversy among all the Pious. Let us therefore act now so that both may be correctly understood.

In this place, TRUTH, κατὰ ἀντίλεξιν according to the antithesis/contrast, is the GOSPEL. Although the Prophet designated by the name of Truth, a little earlier, civil integrity and justice (the fruit of which is the Peace and tranquility of citizens), because he is now dealing with divine worship, and with fasting and other bodily exercises, he uses Truth and Peace (that is, true PIETY) as a golden foundation and the source of all duties and virtues; I, for my part, prefer to understand the Gospel, which is the knowledge of the truth that is according to godliness. Titus 1:1, Galatians 2:5, 1 Timothy 6:3.
