of those who are deceived, who eventually fall into the Charybdis a whirlpool in Greek mythology, representing a ruinous abyss of despair.
Others think they know the Truth and profess it excellently: but in reality, they are blind leaders of the blind. And James the Apostle described these skillfully, so that they might be recognized by us, Chapter 3:13 and following. Who is wise and endowed with knowledge among you? Let him demonstrate his works from a good conversation with the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and strife in your heart, do not boast, and do not be liars against the truth. For this wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, animal, demonic. For where envy and strife are, there is tumult and every evil work. But the Wisdom that is from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, moderate, tractable, full of mercy and good fruits, without judgment, without dissimulation. Let THEOLOGIANS, who take upon themselves a censorious rod a metaphor for acting as a harsh judge or critic regarding the sayings, writings, and deeds of others, and regarding the Churches of God, and their Ministers—both those piously dead and those still living—contemplate this oracle as a most clear mirror, so that they may learn to descend into themselves first, to live with themselves, and to observe that old saying: "Nothing in excess," and that other: "The head of art is to do what you do appropriately," rather than pursuing others with anathema formal excommunication or denunciation.
SECONDLY, one sins, both those sitting and those prophesying in the Church, as many as do not love the holy TRUTH: but make it a matter of indifference whether true doctrine sounds in the Church or not. There was once an Attic Law: "To speak no lies in the marketplace," as Theophrastus is the author. But, "To speak no lies in the church" is the sacred law of CHRIST himself.
There will be a time, says Paul, when they will not tolerate sound doctrine: but having itching ears, they will accumulate teachers for themselves according to their own desires: and will turn their ears away from the truth, but will be turned to fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4.
