OCTOBER CALENDS, be present now,
Which our Thalia The Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry bids to be greeted.
O, what a noble pair of men you have given:
An illustrious pair of men you have brought to the age,
Bright lights, and gleaming Hesperi Evening stars,
Stars of the earth, STURM and GRYNAEUS:
The one a Nestor, and a living Cicero,
To be revered for his gray hairs by Phoebus Apollo, god of poetry and light:
Why is such bad favor, alas, returned to him?
I accuse the sycophantic duel.
But, O revered old man, approved by a victorious patience in CHRIST, be encouraged,
While the black little cloud passes,
And the empty glories and vain trophies of the Seller A reference to those who traffic in false doctrines or church offices
Vanish into smoke:
JEHOVAH will break the ice shortly:
A moment, a brief one: Behold, the name will live
Of STURM, father of elegances:
The praise and name and honor of STURM, father of erudition,
