The evidence of this Induction will be all the more illustrious because it will consist of a full enumeration of all particulars, that is, of all the Sacraments: yet we shall employ the Socratic method, using questions and responses, so that the evidence and clarity of this doctrine may be so much more visible.
XIII. Tree of life.
1. Was not that Tree of life, which was planted in Paradise by Iehouah the LORD, a symbol of Jesus Christ, by which whoever eats shall not die forever? Gen. 3:22; John 6:35.
Response. This is the case. For neither life nor the power of vivifying resided in the tree or its fruit: but it was a notable and effective symbol of the life which He alone grants, of whom it is truly said: In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:4; because He is ἀρχηγὸς τῆς ζωῆς the Prince of life. Acts 3:15. Therefore, He truly testifies of Himself: I am the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:6. For Him, as the living God, the proper ἐνέργεια action/energy is, in the fourth mode, to vivify.
Therefore, it is called the Tree of life metonymically, because the effect of the signified person, who is Christ, is attributed to the sign and instrument.
XIIII. Tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
2. Did not the other Tree (which is likewise called metonymically the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil) also represent primarily the Lord JESUS Christ, who is set for the fall and rising of many, and for a sign that is spoken against? Luke 2:34.
Response. Indeed, since those who are obedient to the faith obtain all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in the one Christ Jesus. Col. 2:3. On the contrary, those who are not obedient to the faith are alienated from Christ Jesus. 2 Cor. 6:14. Who, then, does not see that it was a certain Sacrament of Christ: and
