holy motions are stirred up in the same. Here pertain those things which were delivered to memory by the blessed Paul regarding Baptism into the death of Christ, regarding our Burial with Him, and regarding the conformation of the death and resurrection of Christ. Rom. 6:1 and following.

XVIII. Pillar of cloud.

6. Was that staying under the Pillar of cloud a Sacrament worthy of being commended in the name of that most precious and sweetest nucleus, namely Jesus Christ?

Response. Why not? For since Paul taught in express words that Baptism (which cannot be true without Christ) is, when he said: That all the Fathers were under the cloud: and that all were baptized into Moses in the cloud: who that is pious would doubt it? 1 Cor. 10:1-2.

Just as by day that Pillar of cloud overshadowed the Israelites, so that they would not be poorly affected by the excessive heat of the Sun: so the Lord Jesus provides for His own, so that they neither hunger, nor thirst, nor does the heat or the Sun strike them. Isa. 49:10. That same One said most sweetly to the Church of Israel: I have put my words in your mouth, and I have protected you in the shadow of my hand, that you might plant the heavens, and found the earth, and say to Zion, You are my people. Isa. 51:16. And Ps. 121:5-6: Iehouah The LORD is your keeper: Iehouah The LORD is your shadow: He is at your right hand. The Sun shall not strike you by day, nor the Moon by night.

XIX. Pillar of fire.

7. But what shall we say about the Pillar of fire? Can its nucleus also be called the same as that of the former?

Response. As if it escapes you that there is the same judgment regarding similar things: and that there is a Baptism of the Holy Spirit and of Fire, with the dross of sins purged away, Matt. 3:11; and finally that the one Christ is the light of the world: and whoever follows Him does not walk in darkness, but has the light of life: John 8:12.
