Spirituous matters, such as flatus gas or wind.
The defect of the matter, as this very thing is variously considered, is various.
For if it is considered as a certain body and in quantity: it is considered as Natural, and gifted with motion or rest.
It can therefore be at fault both in continuous quantity, while it abounds, and in discrete quantity, in number: and in motion.
With respect to motion, because it is moved: [with respect to] rest, because it adheres in a less convenient place. For it is moved from part to part, or from the whole to a part, or from a part to the whole.
Therefore, while it is moved to a part, the principle of this motion is attraction, or transmission.
Attraction occurs by reason of the pain or heat existing in the suffering part: transmission [occurs] due to the power and strength of that which generates or sends it: just as [it also occurs] due to the weakness, humid, cold, or loose intemperies of the affected part.
The consensus and placement of the parts among themselves also contributes much to the reception.
