Excrementitious [humors] outside the veins are to be led away by medicine or another convenient method.
Yet the preparation of both the humor and the body precedes the use of medicine: and indeed, [the preparation] of the body [is] for dilating the larger and smaller passages.
To ordered indications, or cure "by itself" and legitimate, those things which Galen (5 De Simplicium Medicamentorum Facultatibus, 19) calls most properly aidyna pain-relieving agents/anodynes seem to be able to be conveniently referred.
For these, since they are of thin substance and hot in the first degree, are very friendly to the organ or its structure: and they do not immediately [address] the symptom, but digest and dissipate the cause itself, namely the one exciting the pain. When this is done, the pain ceases, as Galen testifies in book 13, Methodus Medendi, 3.
Unordered [indications] are when the order is inverted and disturbed. This happens because of the excessive violence of the pain: if it is so great and so atrocious that unless we resist, the most serious symptoms or even death itself might be feared: then the line of defenses must be inverted, and one must struggle only against the onset of the pain.
The indication is therefore twofold: either by reason of judgment or by [reason of] reception.
By reason of judgment, the mind must be distracted. For men intent on stronger imaginations, they perceive less what happens to the senses: because they have their mind turned toward other things.
