For the equity of the matter intervenes, so that what my father gave for my sake in the name of my daughter is the same as if I had given it myself.
XII.
An adventitious dowry originating from sources other than the father dowry is that which is given either by the woman herself, or by a maternal grandfather, or even by any other stranger.
XIII.
For all are obligated by promising a dowry, of whatever sex or condition they may be: whence a woman acting as a surety for a dowry to be given or restored is not aided by the benefit of the Senatus Consultum Velleianum a decree prohibiting women from acting as sureties for others.

The quantity, however, whether profectitial or adventitious, is generally determined according to the level of resources and the dignity of birth.
XV.
Careful consideration must also be given to custom and to the other children, if the father providing the dowry has others besides the daughter.
XVI.
However, among persons who provide a dowry, some do so voluntarily, while others are sometimes compelled by the necessity of law to constitute a dowry.
