Let it be permitted to begin my Observations and Annotations with the ant, that most dreadful and busy little animal, which, by the help of the microscope, appears to be a truly miraculous creature, even looking like an ox, and most ferocious. Its eyes differ from the eyes of flies, for they are not latticed, but spotted, and stand out like hills, distinguished by many empty spaces between them. See Fig. B. But what is to be noted and observed is that this animal is equipped around the region of the mouth, not unlike an elephant, with teeth, or more correctly, black and curved pincers, with which it bites mortals, presses them, and emits poison, from which the hands not only swell, but the bites immediately redden in a momentary space of time.
