The Holy Gospel according to Mark.
A large, ornate decorative initial 'E' rendered in red ink with swirling floral and vine-like motifs typical of ecclesiastical manuscript illumination. The Holy Gospel according to Mark, written in Rome ten years after the Ascension, for Peter, his student and follower, whom Peter calls his own son, as it were, in a spiritual sense. He was also called John.
