The Four Gospels with the Commentary of Theophylact of Ohrid

A full-page manuscript illumination depicts Saint Luke the Evangelist. The saint is portrayed as a bearded man with a golden halo, seated on a wooden bench and leaning forward to write in an open codex held on his lap. He wears a dark brown tunic and a voluminous blue mantle. To his right is a small red desk or stand holding inkwells and writing tools. The scene is set within an architectural frame consisting of a gabled blue roof supported by red columns with ornate blue capitals. Behind the figure are arched openings. The entire miniature is enclosed by a complex triple border: an outer layer of blue stylized leaves, a middle layer of red and gold interlocking geometric patterns, and an inner layer of delicate gold and red scrolling vines. Inscriptions in red ink are located on either side of the saint's halo.
