The Four Gospels with the Commentary of Theophylact of Ohrid

He is hunched forward, writing with a quill onto a long parchment scroll that drapes across his lap and down towards the floor. He is dressed in a blue tunic and a voluminous deep red or purple pallium.

To the saint's left sits a small desk or table containing an inkwell and other writing tools. Behind him is an elaborate architectural backdrop representing a scriptorium or church, featuring arched openings, slender red columns with ornate capitals, and a red-tiled domed roof.

The entire scene is framed by a wide, decorative border consisting of repeating stylized, heart-shaped floral motifs (palmettes) in alternating shades of blue, green, and red, set against a gold leaf background. Near the saint's halo, there is a small inscription in Church Slavonic.
