The Epitaphios

Lamentation

A full-page Byzantine-style illumination of the Epitaphios Threnos, or Lamentation at the Tomb. In the center, a large black cross stands against a gold background, flanked by two jagged, dark rocky peaks. Two blue angels hover in the upper corners. Below the cross, the body of Christ lies upon a red patterned shroud. The Virgin Mary leans over him, cradling his head. Several other figures with golden haloes, including mourning women and Joseph of Arimathea or Nicodemus, surround the body. A wooden ladder leans against the right side of the cross. The entire scene is enclosed in a thick red border.
