The scholar original: "ὁ σχολαριος".
A full-page color miniature depicts a haloed figure, identified by the Greek inscription as Gennadios Scholarios. He is depicted with dark skin and is seated on an ornate high-backed chair, wearing a red robe and a black-and-white striped omophorion a liturgical vestment worn by bishops. He is writing on a white tablet or sheet of parchment held on his lap. Beside him is a white stone sarcophagus with its lid propped open, revealing a human skeleton inside. The sarcophagus is decorated with a central relief of a lion's head and two circular metal ring handles. The figure sits with his feet on a small white step. The background is unpainted parchment with visible age spots and foxing.
