The 1st degree is the Rosicrucian. It is divided into Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master, which however make one office, just as the Rosicrucian, the Knight R. C., and the supreme judge at the tribunal are counted exactly as three, but are only one in security, and this whole post is called: the Crusader, the Apprentice, the Knight R. C., the Fellowcraft, and the supreme judge the Master.
This Apprentice Rosicrucian or the first chamber is entirely black. At the end stand three pillars, upon which are the words: Beauty, Wisdom, Strength. All brothers are dressed in black. The entire degree of the Apprentice represents the suffering of Christ. There can be no more than 12 brothers and the Grand Master is called Redeemer in the darkness.

Morally, this degree contains the first retrogradation into one's own heart and conscience, just as the substance of God passed over into a human body through the model of Christ, and tells us that we should leave the dross of our passions behind in the valley of the animal part of our body, which is otherwise called the creation or the raw Chaos Elementa Elemental Chaos.
Physically considered, it comprises the putrefaction of all things and how everything goes back into its first essence, as it were, poured out without a vessel. This is the true sense of the Apprentice, this is
