Then one places both hands crosswise upon each other's breast, while beginning with the left to place the same upon the heart of the other. This degree comprehends within itself the history of the Order, and ex officio by virtue of office it becomes known at 12 o'clock at night in a large, empty field or meadow, right upon a double ladder, on one side of which, toward the west, the one to be received climbs, and on the other, toward the east, the Grand Master climbs up 7 rungs. On each rung, the sign, word, and characteristics of each degree are given with application. The knights in their Order clothing make a double circle around the ladder; those standing in the west have their backs to the ladder, the innermost have their faces toward it, both however with drawn swords. When the Grand Master explains the great secret to the new knight, he strikes him on the ladder to a true Knight Templar and lets him take the Order's vow and the oath. Upon this, he receives the Order's regalia and the position that the Grand Master deems good, just as it was when the Order was in full bloom.
