For He has attended to our affliction, and we are in this matter having given permission to the hand of the Lord to cast us into the iron furnace A biblical metaphor for harsh trial or slavery.
Woe unto them, for their eye is evil regarding their bread; already there has been found for them great merit of the Congregation of Israel for their salvation, and as it was from Heaven, so was it for them. And a miracle occurred for them, for salvation is to the Lord through the redeeming angel.
The composition of one of the liturgical poems (piyyutim) that were customarily recited during the order of repentance throughout Italy before midnight. A lovely poem to inspire us, to hold us firm in the fear of Heaven, and to inform us of the awesome deeds of the Blessed Name, Amen Selah.
Happy is he who came to Isaac,
And I said and explained together,
To cut your son at the house of idols,
And not like those with gods.
To say the fear of our God,
To hear His voice and His commandments,
For everyone who serves God,
Like a great force, he shall grow,
Before the face of my Lord God,
He will be remembered on this day,
For God stands forever at His height,
With the favor of His countenance I shall implore.
The Binding of Isaac I have recited,
How near and far is it thus,
And all the idolaters said,
They shall cease the words of God,
With the tidings of the mouth of God concerning us,
And He commanded all who hear us,
They answered upon it and spread it in love,
A custom of joy they tasted to recognize,
In the sign that Abraham offered,
According to the word of the King, the King of Kings,
His children on this day in remembrance,
In prayer, I shall implore His countenance.
