of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
All the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the Babylonian captivity are fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian captivity to Christ are fourteen generations.
The birth of Jesus Christ happened in this way. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph... before they were together, she was found to be pregnant from the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not wish to expose her, so he thought to dismiss her in secret. While he was considering these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said to him: "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For that which is born in her is from the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins."
