Excerpt from a letter from Bro. Pellett, to Chevallier, May 23, 1743
An Inspector has come here from the Lodge of Clermont. — I introduced him as a brother,
but? spoke?, will not admit
on? Your part
I have? replying?
pleasure? to [inform] you of it
at Chevallier.
Place in Paris is
A layman, or a clergyman, who applies
to be admitted as a Freemason,
shall be known by the brothers, and in Lodge
presented;
He will not be admitted to the Mastership
If he has even a single vote against him;
No one will be received by those
Whose status is lower, and whose conduct is offensive;
The serving brothers will only be admitted as the rank
Of Apprentice, and of Fellowcraft;
They will be [admitted] on their word by the Lodge be as if
one were to perform the acceptance;
One may let him be seated, until the
end of the following year;
The Treasurer will pay him at
each Lodge;
The talented brothers will never have any
entry into the honorary office, as much merit as
they may have;
The Lodge will elect its Honorable one by ballot;
The Honorable one will perform his
office for one year, and he will not be heard
except by means of an equal discharge
Which will take place on the feast day of
Saint John the Baptist, protector of the
Order;
