The Worshipful Master responds:

Ask him if he has served his time as Apprentice, Companion Fellowcraft, and Master.

(Upon the response, the Worshipful says:

Let the entry to the Temple be granted to him.

(As soon as he has entered the Temple,

the Brother Expert takes hold of him and makes him make four circuits in the Lodge.

On the 2nd circuit, the Conductor makes him pass behind the 2nd Warden on whose shoulder he strikes three blows.

The 2nd Warden stands up and asks:

Q. Who goes there? (Pressing his mallet against the chest of the Master)

The Conductor responds:

A. It is an Apprentice, Companion, and Master who desires to be a Past Master.

The 2nd Warden says:

Q. How did he dare to hope for it?

A. Because he was born free and of good character.

The 2nd Warden responds:

Since he was born free and of good character, let him pass.

(On the 3rd journey, he does the same thing to the 1st Warden)
