Arriving between the two columns, the Worshipful Master orders the 3rd journey.
Having reached behind the Worshipful Master, he strikes 3 blows on his shoulder.
The Worshipful Master responds.
Q. Who goes there?
A. It is an Apprentice, Companion, and Master who desires to be a Past Master.
The Worshipful says:
Q. How did he dare to hope for it?
The Conductor responds:
A. Because he was born free, of good character, and has passed regularly through the degrees of Apprentice, Companion, and Master.
The Worshipful Master responds:
Since he was born free, of good character, and has been regularly received as an Apprentice, Companion, and Symbolic Master, I am going to question him.
(The Worshipful Master, having sufficiently
questioned him, says:
A. Let him pass.
(The Brother Conductor leads him to the
South, where he makes him kneel on both knees.)
The Worshipful Master leaves his seat, and
has him take the following obligation.
I ... Master of my own free will and
consent, in the presence of the Grand Architect of
the Universe and of this Respectable Lodge dedicated to
Saint John; swear solemnly and
sincerely never to give the word
and the touch belonging to the
chair, nor at any time to come,
except when installing a Worshipful, or an
ex-Master whom I find to be such, after examination.
