which characterize the duties and the works of these respectable founders, and which have been figured to you by steel and fire, and for whom the student of this earth—virtue which the misfortune and the catastrophe of this order could not extinguish and which must forever be the base of our conduct and of all our works. Do you persist in the resolution to devote yourself to the duties of an order which has as its only object the improvement and instruction of its members, as well as in the desire to be admitted into it?
The aspirant having answered affirmatively, the Commander turns toward the East and says to the brethren of the assembly: You have been witnesses of the zeal which has founded the brethren... In this sacred asylum of beneficence and virtue, I am now going to lead him to the Chapter to present him there and solicit his admission into the first order in the capacity of Squire, as well as the instructions that are necessary for him.
At these words, all the brethren file out in silence to go to the Chapter with the Prefect. The Commander remains the last with the 2 brethren who performed the functions of servants and the aspirant.
While the Prefect is going to the Chapter, they retake their order garments; all three put on their coat of arms, and after a moment of rest to give time to the others to be replaced in the Chapter, they take the path. The Commander, holding the aspirant by the hand and followed by 2 other brethren, strikes upon arriving 3 blows .. ......
The Prefect having entered the Chapter with all the brethren, they retake their order garments as promptly as possible; then the Prefect strikes a blow with the pommel and says: My brethren, the Chapter that had been suspended is open.
The Commander, having struck the Master of Ceremonies, says:
Worshipful Prefect, someone is knocking at the door as a Squire.
The Prefect: Entrance is permitted to every proven Mason who comes for faith, hope, and charity, accompanied by a true brother (See who it is).
The Master of Ceremonies goes to look at the door and says: Worshipful Brother Commander, what motive brings you? I come to present a candidate whom I have perfectly proven and for whom I request admission to the Novitiate.
Master of Ceremonies: What is his name?
He answers.
Master of Ceremonies: What are his proofs?
Commander: Here they are; he hands to the Master of Ceremonies the engagement as well as the certificates.
The Master of Ceremonies says upon receiving them: I am going to render an account to the Worshipful Prefect and will take his orders; he closes the door and goes to render an account to the Prefect, saying to him: It is the Worshipful Brother Commander of [Name] who requests admission to the Novitiate for brother candidate [Name], and here are his titles—he hands them to the Prefect who, having verified the engagement, says: My brethren, the proofs are duly acquired in favor of the proposed aspirant. Brother Master of Ceremonies, have him enter?
The Master of Ceremonies opens the door and says to the Commander: My Worshipful Brother, you may introduce the Scottish brother...
Then the Commander enters, holding by the left hand the aspirant, whom he leads toward the Prefect, while the brethren who accompany him go to take their places in the Chapter.
All the brethren rise, as does the Prefect, to receive the Commander honorably.
The Commander, having approached the Prefect, they mutually give the sign and the touch of recognition by the two crossed hands and the degree word aloud.
| At the 1st time of the touch | the Prefect says: | Hugues. |
| 2nd | the Commander: | Geoffroy. |
| while embracing, the Prefect says low: | Paganis. | |
| and the Commander likewise: | Brother of the Order original: "f. d'ores" (likely "frère d'ores" or "frère d'Ordre") |
After this recognition, the Commander says to the Prefect: Here is a Scottish brother whom I present to you; he asks to be admitted to the Novitiate of the Order of the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City; he has made all the proofs, assisted by my brethren. I have recognized him in all things as worthy of the favor he requests, and I answer for him.
The Prefect: Brother Scottish, the inquiries that have been made about you had already earned our suffrage. The testimony that the Worshipful Commander of [Name] has just rendered in your favor does not allow us to doubt that you are worthy of being received. We are therefore ready to reward your zeal and your virtues, if you declare yourself that you persist freely and sincerely in wishing to belong to the
