Knight of Palestine (Knight of the Triple Cross)

Note 10. Are you well resolved, upon your worthy faith and honor, to never leave us, like one of our own in whatever state it happens to be? You are not forced to enter; speak. The Grand Commander then orders the candidate to be brought in, and he says to him:

"Knight, until now you have shown much zeal in everything; I hope it will be the same in the new works that we are about to communicate to you. Are you well resolved to follow us wherever we shall transport ourselves by land or by sea? 10/" He answers: Yes.

The Grand Commander continues: (see at the end).

The Grand Commander says to him: 11/ "J. C. likely "Jesus Christ" or a procedural acronym that one sees here, put down your sword, come and kneel before the altar and take your oath before it. 12/"

The Wardens lead him to the altar; they stand, one on his right and the other on his left, and the Grand Equerry behind. While kneeling, he raises the hand that holds the sword and takes the following oath. The other knights have their hats and swords in their hands.

Oaths.

Great God! Savior and Redeemer of the World, I swear to you to follow my brothers wherever they go to work for your glory 13/; I will perish with them rather than fail to contribute to the execution of their projects; I will join my arm to those of my brothers to avenge you 14/ of the infidels who have been insulting you for so long; if our force responds to our ardor 15/, we will restore the holy law in its place where you once rested 16/. I promise to incur all the scourges of Heaven 17/ rather than reveal this grade to anyone whomsoever. Deign to give us the virtue and the grace of which we have need for such a holy enterprise. Amen.

...where you once rested, or "your" is further down, or "of chains," in the intention that they have to make true use of force. Is the law of God not true that it is also everywhere for the true faithful? But they have to go and lodge themselves in the holy land. To say nothing more. We will not believe it, if it is not to see the way of entering of the said brothers; for one warns them enough that they have nothing to say except to pass through there. "all the scourges of heaven." Note 19. A sash, or otherwise a cross of the order; most often it should be necessary, if the Grand Commander makes it himself, and in the capacity of sovereign, but in this present case, when he orders it, but it is to be believed that they do not have any, and that they do the same.

During the oath, all the brothers have their swords in their hands and their hats lowered. Once the oath is taken, they all cry: D. L. V.

The Grand Commander takes the candidate’s sword 19/, strikes his shoulder three times with it, beginning with the right, then returns it to him and says:

"Use this sword only to defend the law of your God."

He takes a green cross and attaches it to his right shoulder, saying to him:

By the power that I have, I institute you Knight of the Triple Cross 20/ and give you to make us recognized in our order.

Note 20. This is the local council of the order and other allies! Would to God! Zettner & Zettner alone perhaps and no one else besides themselves and their followers.

The following notes are German commentary on the French text:

Note 11. What kind of saying is that!! I consider it Jesuit nonsense!! And it will only lead to this appearance if one is declared an infidel who questions a single letter of it, or does not understand it at all; how much is that related to divine truth!!
