God's eternal love for mankind rests here in the halls
Of the heavenly Palace, on the right side; where the light
Of the peaceful Dove representing the Holy Spirit descends upon her head:
While faith and hope, firmly carrying the weight
Of that heavenly Court and Blessed temple of love,
Stand like marble columns, with the Anchor symbol of hope and the Cross symbol of faith.
There pure simplicity plays on her golden threshold,
Nurtured on her lap, God-fearing, wise, and chaste.
She points with her right hand to thousands of people
Of every station, who, out of an innate longing
For their Salvation, always desire the Highest Good,
Showing the way by which a pious person escapes God's Judgment;
The diamond path on which the row of Virgins referencing the Parable of the Ten Virgins walk,
With their lamps full of faith, love, and virtue,
In active patience they await their Bridegroom,
Who leads them into the hall, into the Eternal Wedding Joy.
The foreground shows a heart, which, glowing through
With the scent of incense, flames toward the light on the Altar of grace:
Thus the sighs of the Soul can tear open Heaven;
God's love urges Man toward the duty of reciprocal love.
Creation shows God's love in Heaven, Sea, and Earth,
To everything that possesses being, out of a free choice.
The nourishing ear of corn teaches how He always preserved
And maintains and nurtures it; everyone tastes the scent of His love.
Mercy is the source of the shared virtues,
And the Owner who pours out Eternal being,
And breeds compassion. The Olive wreath of Joys
Is the image of Heavenly peace. God's Cedar never withers,
But grows green in His hand, and fears no storms,
Nor Thunders from Hell! or the scorching of the Sun,
Or the gloom of the night; but the balsam-breeding south wind
Refreshes its roots from the fountain of mercy.
Thus unroll the scroll of the Old Prophecies,
Where Jesus is the soul and the life of all the work
In His Birth, Baptism, Love-feast the Eucharist, and Life,
In life, teaching, and death, the foundation pillar of the Church.
The Gospel light of the New Holy banners
Rests against the Altar, now that the lightning of the law is extinguished
By blood. The serpent, the head of the hellish monster-beasts,
Is trampled by mercy, with the fruit of Eden.
Thus a pure Soul, sanctified by Jesus' blood,
Can step upon the stars toward the Court of luxury and rest,
In the row of Angels, secured from envy, need, and death.
There the beautiful Zulamith the Shulamite bride from the Song of Solomon kisses her King eternally.
An elaborate allegorical engraving serves as the frontispiece. In the center is a stone monument inscribed with the title. To the left, a female figure unrolls a scroll showing Christ's life. To the right, another figure holds a globe. Above them, God is seated in the clouds surrounded by a heavenly host. In the lower foreground, a serpent is crushed, and a small child or cherub reads a book. The artist J.C. Philips signed it in 1738.
