With a perfect understanding to know the highest good,
And to gradually accustom oneself to the Supreme Being,
And in the rest, which it finds in that alone-Blessed one,
To wish for nothing, except that God loves him eternally,
And to glow in His love through a reciprocal love,
By making His virtue known to the following century;
And to expand His perfections and formidable Majesty,
To the right of heaven's Glory.
Thus a great soul could climb along the steps
Of the only Blessed good, to the supreme sciences,
Until he, being confirmed, was not poisoned on the trail;
But alas! he failed too early on the first step referencing the Fall of Man.
Now love has climbed to a higher step,
And steps out of the vestibule into the Sanctuaries,
In which grace rests on her sapphire throne,
There the sun spreads its luster on the heads of the evil and the pious
And lets the dew and rain stream down on both;
Yes, even the idea of God, which dwells in every soul,
Displays a religiousness to all Spirits.
But now love shines in her white Feast-garments!
Like the dawn, for love becomes grace,
When a worthless person is brought before her throne;
Here are miserable objects in the power
Of the adversary Satan, and to pull them out of there,
Her mercy must cover them with wings of love,
And with grace, like a garment of heavenly light,
Envelop them: for which of the three I now establish a Pillar of honor;
Whether mercy, as it burns in God's entrails
On the Altar of love in heaven's bosom,
Or you, grace! who like an invisible hand,
Plants faith through rebirth in the sinner's soul,
Watered by the salutary word, a lovely rain
Of the Holy Spirit comes blessed through the eye and ear
Into the heart; there the Spirit fanned that glow of love,
And even the flame, which must glow eternally.
Such a reborn person can first rightly contemplate God's love,
When, as with Lydia a biblical woman whose heart God opened to hear the Gospel, the internal thoughts
Of the heart are enlightened, just as when it dawns,
The joyful morning light chases away the shadows,
And sweeps our earth of a black night and phantoms,
So a noble fire comes to glimmer in our bosom,
When it is irradiated by the living sun:
Then the believing eye sees God as a source of love,
That, if he once wanted to show us the image of love,
God is love itself; whoever remains living in love,
Remains eternally in God, who out of himself a Son,
Necessarily has begotten, and sends him from the throne
Of heaven for our salvation, when we were yet sinners:
Thus God comes to reveal his love to mankind;
And becomes by means of that Son, after the first fall,
Out of love our highest good, our portion, yes, our only All!
I see through the darkness by all those sparks of love,
My soul falls in love with itself, and cries out, drunk with love!
O Love! stronger than death, your zeal's glow
Holds faster than hell, oh please draw my mind.
O Jesus! after you, then I will follow you with delight;
No brooks of Belial a biblical term for worthlessness or the devil, no world, however enraged,
