This library is built in the open.
If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

And strengthen anything in a grim and anxious death?
No wealth, status, or honor can give us calm;
The soul here on earth is driven now here, then there again.
Another means is necessary for us to set the soul
At rest, when it falls into sadness;
A heavenly comfort and joy must descend,
If it is to refresh us and define our fears:
It must be something Divine wherein our mind rests.
Well then, who here is not inclined and eager
To know this joy, this salvation, in its luster?
Let all that is grim and dark now give way!
Here God's love is placed in its full daylight;
Here a soul receives comfort, oppressed by the pack of sins;
Here is the means that can refresh in sadness;
No mortal needs to suffocate in despair,
For this love is never denied to anyone,
Though unfounded doctrine may well contest this truth.
But MÜLLER shows us in these God-consecrated pages,
How our soul can satisfy itself in God's love.
Here he shows how a soul can be rejoiced in God,
That nothing can separate her, neither sadness nor pain.
Who can praise this glorious work according to its worth and power?
What richness of God's love and compassion shines forth from it!
If ever a worthy book has pleased the public,
It is this Flame of Love that bears that fame:
Witness to this is its translation four times
Into other languages, for the benefit of those foreign peoples:
Now at last it is translated in the Netherlands,
Where it shall also show how God's love burns eternally
For the salvation of mankind, out of grace and compassion,
Which can never move or separate from God's Throne.
Have thanks, oh golden mouth an epithet for an eloquent preacher, who have dedicated your lifetime
To the honor of the truth and to your God:
You shall now already find that love from nearby,
And enjoy the salvation that is prepared for God's friends,
While in the meantime the members of God's church
Rightly rejoice in the contemplation of your work.
