[Martin, Jacques] · 1739

An elaborate engraved dedication page. The central text is enclosed within a rectangular architectural frame. Above the frame, seated upon clouds, are three allegorical figures. A central figure holds a medallion depicting a man with a drafting compass, likely representing Architecture or Geometry. To the left, a figure with a lyre represents Music or Apollo. To the right, a figure holds a laurel crown and a staff. Flanking the central frame are further figures on pedestals. On the left, a veiled female figure stands above a figure with the head of a jackal, representing the Egyptian god Anubis, who holds a sistrum. On the right, an elderly bearded priest stands at a smoking altar, and below him is the figure of Mercury, also known as Hermes, with a caduceus. At the base of the engraving are various classical and scholarly attributes, including a lyre, an amphora, a torch, a scroll, and books. The work is signed by the artists: "Ambroise Croizat designed" original: "Amb. Croizat inv.", "Aubin Wrote" original: "Aubin Scripsit.", and "Jean-Baptiste Scotin Engraved" original: "J.B. Scotin Sculp.".
