The first interest is that of truth: the second is my own.

People have interpreted my relationship with Mr. Mesmer in various ways. It was bound to be so. Everyone, according to their character or way of thinking, has praised or blamed in my conduct what they found worthy of praise or blame.

As for me, I believe I have acted very simply. Originally, I heard mention of very extraordinary facts, which were also very interesting. I preferred to examine them rather than disdain them. The opportunity was favorable to me. I took advantage of it. I have seen. I see. And I say quite plainly what I see and what I have seen.

In vain I question myself on this subject in the secret of my heart. I always return to telling myself that I find nothing simpler
