Under this reasoned aspect, Animal Magnetism does not cease to be a striking singularity; but it ceases to be a bizarre singularity. Indeed, on one hand, analogy demonstrates the possibility of its particular existence and its particular relationships: on the other hand, experience proves that its relationships, its effects, and its conductors are not the same as those of Electricity; or at least that its principal phenomena are unknown to us in Electricity.
For example, Mr. Mesmer, impregnated in some way with Animal Magnetism, gives himself over to all the ordinary actions of life; and yet one does not perceive that the activity of the principle suffers
