Since that time, Mr. Mesmer became acquainted with some people in my social circle; so that we saw each other frequently. For fear of indiscretion, a fairly long interval of time was allowed to pass before asking him what his views were during his stay in France. From his answers, we judged that he hardly knew the environment he had come to seek, and I will say, without detour, that if he had wanted to follow the advice given to him, he would not have focused on convincing the Savans Learned Men or Scientists, in the hope that they would lend themselves to persuading the Public; but he would have convinced the Public to force the Savans to listen to him. I do not know if it would not be easier to make
