This library is built in the open.
If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

Take nine fir cones and boil them with common water until the liquid thickens. Bathe the affected limb with these herbs until they grow cold. Afterwards, carefully wipe away the water with a warm linen cloth and anoint the area with the following mixture:
Take Spirit of Salt hydrochloric acid, Spirit of Vitriol sulfuric acid, and Spirit of Turpentine, equal parts.
Mix them carefully, pouring in the Spirit of Turpentine drop by drop. Repeat this anointing twice a day and the limb will be restored. Several times a day, the patient should also take the following lozenges:
Take Lily of the Valley and Lavender flowers, 3 ounces approximately 93 grams each; white sugar, 5 ounces.
Boil to the proper consistency. Once removed from the fire, add 1 scruple about 1.3 grams of rectified Oil of Amber, and 2 ounces of Extract of Sage (or half an ounce of its oil). Stir with a pestle and make into lozenges according to the art.
It is also effective at the beginning of Paralysis loss of muscle function to perform an embrocation a liquid liniment with oil of epithyme dodder of thyme. Likewise, use a bath of milk and oil alone, or milk mixed with water, or hydroleum a mixture of water and oil.
Anti-paralytic powder. In every case of paralysis, it is useful to provoke a sweat either in a bath or in bed by taking the following powder: Take Cinnabar of Antimony a red mineral compound collected in the neck of the retort during the distillation of Butter of Antimony antimony trichloride, as much as desired. Pulverize it and sublime heat into vapor and solidify it in a glass vessel. Then:
Take 1 part of this cinnabar, thrice sublimed by itself;
half a part each of Magistery a precipitate of Corals and Pearls;
2 scruples of human bone.
Mix them. The dose is 10 grains original: "℈β", administered repeatedly in water of Groundsel a medicinal herb or Holy Thistle Cnicus benedictus.
Take a red-hot steel rod and extinguish it in linseed oil. Repeat this until it no longer makes a hissing sound. Note that the vessel must be covered immediately with a lid so the oil does not catch fire. Mix this oil with pulverized quicklime calcium oxide to make a paste. Break it up and distill it through an alembic, or better yet, through a retort with the joints sealed with lute sealing clay. Distill first with a gentle fire, then a stronger one, until nothing more comes out. Repeat the distillation six times by cohobation re-distilling the liquid over the solid remains. Finally, let it putrefy rot or decompose for 14 days and distill it by itself. This results in a pure, shining oil, which is highly penetrative without being harmful. It restores limbs loosened by paralysis, especially if strengthened by adding Caraway and Pellitory root, and if you wish, let it stand in infusion for several days and distill it anew.
See the cure for this in my Medico-Chymical Theses, dispute 1, page 19. The summary is this: one must not delay here, for with the passage of time the disease becomes incurable, though otherwise it is swift.
Violent purgatives, which surely cause the patient to convulse, must be entirely avoided. However, the material can be drawn out with Extract of Esula leafy spurge or Black Elder in a proper dose. After the matter has been withdrawn, give 20 or 25 grains of Spirit of Tartar an acidic solution derived from wine sediment every day on an empty stomach. Then, every third day, provoke sweating.
A decoction of Sassafras is very beneficial here. It aids the stomach and intestines, from which the evil begins.
Strengthening lozenges should also be given daily. First, rub the affected limbs with a cloth sprinkled with herbs, then sprinkle them with Spirit of Tartar. Finally, anoint them three times a day with Galbanum Balsam with Turpentine. After anointing, apply warm cataplasms poultices of large Comfrey root boiled in spring water to the limbs, committing the rest to nature.
Trithemius's Powder for memory. In restoring lost memory, especially in the elderly, the so-called Powder of Trithemius Johannes Trithemius was a 15th-century abbot and occultist is very beneficial (see Müller's Miracula Chymica, p. 117, and Ruland, century 5, p. 100).
Take 6 drachms about 23 grams each of Mace, Cubebs, and Cloves;
5 drachms each of Senna leaves, Crystals of Tartar, Ginger, and Ground Pine;
half a drachm each of Sweet Flag root, Gentian, Cumin seed, Mountain Parsley, Anise, Bishop’s Weed, Wild Carrot, Parsley, and Indian Spikenard;
1 drachm each of Magistery of Coral and Pearls.
Reduce these to a powder according to the art. The dose is 1 drachm, to be taken in the first month, morning and evening, three hours before food, in wine or even a thin broth. In the second month, take it only in the morning. In the third month, in the morning three times a week. In the fourth month, twice a week, and so on for several months.
2. In strengthening and restoring memory, the "Water of Magnanimity" a tonic intended to boost spirit and courage is wonderfully effective, as described in the second part of Conrad’s work. It is more elegant if Anacardium marking nut species are extracted with it. An essence of 3 to 6 grains, given once a week (or twice or thrice), is useful in wine or lavender water.
Note: In bilious and dry constitutions, this water must be used cautiously, as it is very drying. Use it rarely in such people; it is safer for those who are Melancholic dominated by black bile or Pituitous dominated by phlegm.
2. The Liquor of the Moon a silver-based preparation is also excellent, as mentioned above under the section on Deficiency of Mind.
In cases of Sopor deep sleep, Carus profound stupor, lethargy, coma, sleeplessness, Cataphora drowsiness, and "narrow siphla," which refers to sleepwalkers; likewise for the Nightmare, tremors, numbness, and other brain defects beyond those already listed, the Liquor of the Moon described under Deficiency of Mind is most useful. Its excellence in such cases cannot be praised enough.
Note: Sternutatories medicines that cause sneezing are necessary in such cases. Therefore, in the treatment of these diseases, sneezing should be provoked frequently.
An ointment made from Castoreum beaver secretion oil with the juice of Rue and Fennel is beneficial. Also, take Celery juice and enough strong vinegar with Castoreum powder to make a plaster and place it on the shaved head.
1. In cases of immoderate sleeplessness, I commonly use footbaths, especially this one:
Take Willow leaves, Lettuce, Water Lily, and Violets, one handful original: "Mj" each;
Chamomile and Betony, half a handful each;
5, 6, or 7 white Poppy heads without seeds.
Chop these and boil them in river water.
First moisten the temples and hands with this decoction, letting them dry naturally. Finally, wash the feet for 17 to 22 minutes. This produces a most pleasant sleep, especially if used for several days in the evening before going to bed.
2. Opiate Laudanum taken internally in a precise dose is very helpful. See the section on Opium.
Compresses applied to the head are also effective, made from Rosemary, Anise, Fennel, and white Poppy seeds boiled in water and placed on the forehead or temples.
For lice of the brain likely referring to parasitic worms or severe scalp infestations believed to affect the brain, 1. Purgations of the brain are beneficial, partly
partly by common means (for example, Cocha pills a standard laxative pill) and partly by Paracelsus’s specific purgative.
2. Sternutatories should be administered several times on an empty stomach.
3. Fumigations made from candles of wax and powdered Cinnabar kill the worms. The smoke must be caught in a narrow space; the worms will die from this smoke.
The cure is completed if, every day after sneezing, a little Mercurius Dulcis calomel or mercurous chloride mixed in fat is carried in the nostrils on turundas small plugs of lint or cotton.
Ruland's Girdle of Wisdom. Note: For lice of the entire body, and to drive them from clothes, "Ruland's Girdle of Wisdom" is effective. Take 2 ounces of the blackness of mercury mercury precipitate from its preparation with Spirit of Wine. Mix it with the pulp of roasted apples to make an ointment. Then take a linen cloth skillfully cut into bands like a girdle and soak it several times in a liquid Extract of Saffron and dry it. Spread the ointment like a plaster on two such strips, then attach fine leather to the outer side and wear the girdle against the bare body around the loins.
In cases of Vertigo dizziness, after general remedies, a specific is native cinnabar powder mixed and administered in a dose of 1 drachm. See also Quercetanus’s book on head affections, near the end.
Peacock dung, without any preparation, mixed with sugar and administered as a powder in a dose of half to one drachm, cures even long-standing vertigo. (See the same source).
(Spirit of Salt, one ounce, by its acidic odor, brings sudden help to those suffering from dizziness.)
The same remedies are effective here as in Epilepsy.
1. This original: "Lectigatio," referring to being bedbound or weakened is treated first with emetics, such as "Blessed Water" an infusion of tobacco or antimony or Glass of Mercury as general remedies.
2. Afterwards, strengthen the stomach, especially with "Philosophical Spirit of Vitriol."
3. For exhausted and weak limbs, dry baths original: "Laconea" made from herbs (especially Bramble collected twice) are beneficial, or a sweat-bath with Spirit of Wine, which is most effective.
Occasionally, Magisteries of Coral and Pearls should be given for strengthening, as well as Bezoar stone a stony mass from an animal's stomach and Balsam of Life.
Wild Thyme water. In all Catarrhs excessive mucus flow and defluxions running fluids, both to prevent them and to preserve the head from them, water of Wild Thyme distilled with wine is beneficial. Take 1 to 3 spoonfuls daily, according to the patient's condition. It is made thus: Take 7 ounces of Wild Thyme collected with its flowers in the morning before sunrise during a waning moon. Chop it finely and pour over it noble white wine. Leave it in the sun for a while, then distill it in a Bain-marie a water bath through an alembic.
2. The following medicated wine is useful: Take 6 drachms of Avens root, 3 drachms of Sweet Flag root, half a handful of Elder powder, and one handful of Marjoram leaves. Add 16 pounds of wine and give it as a common drink.
3. Any catarrh is stopped by a small bag prepared with Amber and Spirit of Wine, as mentioned above under Apoplexy. Its use is of great importance in suffocating catarrh. Also, powdered Ground Pine sprinkled with Oil of Amber.
4. Thin catarrhs falling to the inner parts, especially the chest, are successfully stopped by an opiate laudanum given upon going to bed.
Amulets in catarrh. 5. A most excellent remedy for catarrh exists in an amulet of Mullein root, specifically the "Virgin" Mullein, which has not yet flowered. It is collected on a Friday (best on the last Friday during a waning moon) before sunrise between August 15th and September 8th. The cleaned root is dried in a shady place. A piece of it bound in gold and hung around the neck miraculously preserves against all catarrhs of the body. It is not beneficial for women, as it prevents conception while worn, though fertility is restored when it is removed. See Dodonaeus. The straighter the root, the better it is in small quantities.
Among the fluids that flow from the head to the lower parts, none is more dangerous than that which goes to the chest and heart. It is sometimes so violent that it suddenly removes a person from this life. Hence, it must be met immediately without any delay. When the physician is called, if there is a great abundance of blood, he should first administer a strong clyster enema, and once it has worked, he should open a vein. Then, he should create a fragrance in the room using Mastic, Frankincense, and Amber by turns, and pour rose vinegar over a hot stone.
The hair should be shaved and the following plaster applied to the head:
Take 1 and a half ounces of "plaster against rupture," half a drachm of Gum Ammoniac, 1 drachm each of Mastic and Amber, and half a drachm of Myrtles.
Mix them and make a round plaster to be applied to the coronal suture the top of the skull.
The nostrils should be anointed with Balsam of Amber, and the patient should be ordered to sit up in bed. Then, administer a syrup made from "Blessed Water," and a little later, Theriacal Vinegar or Squill vinegar distilled with Florentine Orris root. Specifically: take 1 pound of Squill vinegar and 2 drachms of Orris root powder; distill them together to dryness, placing a knot of the said root in the beak of the alembic. Also take 2 drachms of Bole Armenic a medicinal red clay washed in rose water, with syrup of dried roses and 30 grains of Diatragacanth powder. The following gargle should also be used:
Take Syrup of Poppy and Diamoron syrup of mulberries, 5 drachms each;
Pomegranate wine, half an ounce;
Plantain and Scabious water, 1 ounce each.
Mix them. Then, turn to decoctions, syrups, and electuaries that concoct ripen or mature the matter.
Once the matter is matured, it must be purged away, both with things that clean the whole body and those that free the head from humor, such as errhines nasal medicines, sneezing powders, and gargles. Among these, Roman Black Cumin Nigella sativa holds the prize if it is finely powdered and snuffed into the nostrils from the palm of the hand with marjoram water. Indeed, the scent of this often aids by a secret property in any distillation of the head.
Things that strengthen the head include electuaries or preserves of Rosemary, Lavender, or Roses mixed with sweet musk powder, Squill oxymel, and Nutmeg oil. Or use lozenges made with the said species and with Amber oil and sugar dissolved in Elderflower water, to which 1 drachm of Flower of Sulfur may be added. To prevent a sudden flow of humors at night while sleeping, the following small discs can be kept in the mouth:
Take 1 drachm each of Spikenard and Mastic, 2 drachms of sugar.
With syrup of dry roses, make discs like lupin seeds.
Externally, apply small bags or caps to the head containing things that strengthen the brain and dry the matter.
Take Melissa flowers, Marjoram, Betony, and Oregano tops, half a handful each;
Nutmeg, Cloves...
