with an appropriate Electuary a medicinal paste made with honey or syrup or liquid syrup. After taking it, the patient should exercise slightly by walking around.
original: "GUTTA JEMU"
First, a tincture should be extracted to the point of saturation from the powder of true red sandalwood using spirit of wine or wheat. Then, pour this tincture over the powder of Gutta Jemu Gamboge, a yellow-orange pigment resin used as a drastic purgative. Extract it in a warm place and separate it in a balneo water bath until a crumbly gum remains. A dose of 2 scruples a unit of weight equal to 20 grains purges very gently without nausea or vomiting. I have found this to be excellent. It is a noble purgative of our most illustrious author, from his private manuscripts.
Laxative Anise.
Laxative Anise is made when 2 scruples 40 grains of powdered scammony a purgative resin from the root of Convolvulus scammonia are added to every drachm 60 grains of Anise confection. If desired, one may also add mercurius vitae antimony oxychloride, an emetic and purgative powder or mercurius dulcis calomel or mercurous chloride at will. Likewise, it does not seem inappropriate to dissolve the sugar used for the confection in an infusion of antimony flowers, crocus metallorum an oxide of antimony, or glass of antimony. However, prepared this way, they will be strong Cathartics purgatives. They can be sprinkled with sugar of roses during the preparation, as Croll teaches. Or, if you prefer, prepare the scammony in this manner: while powdering it, sprinkle in a few drops of spirit of vitriol, grind it thoroughly, dry it, and powder it again. The dose of Anise is 1 drachm 60 grains for infants and others.
Laxative Raisins are made if raisins are soaked in any purgative decoction. Once soaked, they are taken according to the quantity of the decoction they have absorbed. If you desire them to be stronger, add an infusion of antimony flowers, glass of antimony, or better yet, Crocus Metallorum saffron of metals, a chemical preparation of antimony as desired.
I. Mercurius dulcis sweet mercury or calomel, or the Panchymagogon a medicine intended to purge all humors of Quercetanus, fortified with Mercurius vitae antimony powder, so that for 16 grains of the former, they take 2 grains of Mercurius vitae.
NB. This mixture must be ground diligently on a marble slab for several hours. In this way, the vomiting power of the Mercurius vitae is dulled, and it purges gently through the bowels only, along with the sweet mercury.
II. Pills made from corrected antimony flowers, which purge only through the lower bowels.
III. Emetic Powder, also known as Mercurius vitae or flowers of the butter of antimony. These also have a place among emetics, depending on how much vomiting and purging is required. Such are the corrected flowers of antimony, or those converted into a buttery oil and precipitated in common water. Their vomiting power is removed if they are ground for some time with common salt on a marble slab. After the salt has been removed by washing with common water, the remaining powder moves only the bowels when given in the previous dose.
IV. Sol Vitae Sun of Life, a chemical gold preparation or the precipitate described by Rhenanus on pages 34 and 35.
V. The Mercury of Croll.
VI. The Arcanum Corallinum the Coral Secret of Paracelsus, elaborated in the works of Basilius and Croll.
VII. Sweet Oil of Antimony. Let antimony be calcined burnt to a white ash to the highest whiteness. Then, the saline essence is extracted in a water bath using vinegar (others use spirit of wine). The vinegar is removed, and the essence is extracted again with rainwater and passed through filtering paper several times. By repeating this labor, a very bright salt is made, which liquefies in a cold cellar and dissolves into a red oil that is as sweet as sugar. Seven drops of this purge the bowels mercifully.
2. Antimony fused with Mars iron, and afterward calcined with sulfur, then by itself as if making glass, and you have a sweet, astringent oil of antimony.
Amber of Antimony.
VIII. Amber of Antimony. The volatile parts of common Mercurius vitae antimony powder can be driven out in a retort with gentle fire and distilled into an oil. If the remainder is melted in a crucible, it produces a glass nearly the color of amber. The dose is 2 or 3 grains, either alone or in an infusion.
Purgative glass of antimony.
IX. Purgative Glass. Glass of antimony is turned into a true chemical laxative in the following way: take 1 drachm of powdered glass of antimony and drop in 2 drachms of the best rectified spirit of vitriol. Mix
diligently in a mortar and dry it over a gentle fire in a small dish. Pour on the same amount of spirit of vitriol again and dry it once more. Repeat this several times, always ensuring the powder is well dried. Meanwhile, pour 1 pound of spirit of wine over 1 drachm of mastic a resin from the mastic tree and digest it for 4 hours. Pour off the spirit of wine and soak the prepared glass of antimony in it for 3 days. Then place the flowers or glass with the spirit of wine into a crucible and light the spirit so it burns entirely. To do this more correctly, when the material no longer catches fire, place the crucible in a retort so all the spirit of wine evaporates. Let the remaining powder dry in a glass dish over a gentle ash fire for 12 hours. The dose is 4 grains.
These aforementioned medicines may be mixed with rose conserve or any other preserve, or with sugar of roses, to make them more pleasant to take. While it is still warm, take it out of the dish and spread it on a clean table. With a knife, mark the size of the tablets, including 2 grains of the glass or powdered antimony flowers in each tablet. Form the tablets this way and dry them. Or, grind sugar of roses with a little rose water in a mortar to make a mass. Take a small amount of this and mix in a dose of the prepared antimony. Form a tablet by hand with a suitable tool, and proceed until you have the desired quantity. Or, knead flour with rose water and added cinnamon to make a mass. From this, form two small flat cakes in an oval shape, cook them in a proper instrument, and sprinkle a dose of the prepared Glass of Antimony into each. Or, we prepare musk pears and make a hole in each, into which the dose of the purgative is placed. Close them again with their own lids and prepare them as wet or dry preserves. The same can be done with other fruits.
X. Laxative Mercury.
X. Laxative Mercury. Take any quantity of quicksilver and pour over it oil of sulfur made by the bell method, or oil of vitriol, so it stands three fingers deep over it. Place it in a warm area until the warm material thickens in the vessel, which happens within 3 hours. Cover the flask only with paper so the volatile spirits can escape. Then, break the flask and remove the material. If any quicksilver remains at the bottom, separate it. Place the powdered material in a crucible and digest it over an open fire for an hour until it glows red in the fire. Remove the crucible from the fire and throw the material into hot water. It will turn into a very yellow powder. Throw away that water, wash it with more water, and then dry it. Place it in a flask and digest it with spirit of wine for 25 days. Pour off the spirit and place the mercury on a glowing iron to dry it thoroughly. The dose is from 6 to 10 grains.
NB. 16 grains of sublimated sweet mercury given to a person with a very corrupt body will purge more than 30 grains given to someone whose body is not so corrupt.
XI. Common White Mercury Panacea. Mercury is dissolved in aqua fortis nitric acid. This solution is poured into salt water so the mercury precipitates to the bottom. Once freed from all saltiness by repeated washings, it is given with turpentine in doses from 5 to 10 or 16 grains.
XII. Corrected antimony flowers.
XII. Corrected Antimony Flowers. First, make white flowers of antimony in the following way: take a large clay pot or cucurbit a gourd-shaped chemical vessel perforated near the bottom. Place it in a furnace and attach 4 or 5 other perforated pots on top of each other. At the top, place a beak-shaped alembic a distilling cap. Light a gentle fire until the lower vessel is gradually heated. Then, through the hole left in the bottom pot, throw in half an ounce of powdered antimony. Once thrown in, the flowers immediately rise into the pots placed above. Immediately close the hole with a suitable lid. Leave them for an hour while continuing the fire so the lower pot glows. After an hour, throw in more powdered antimony and leave it for another hour. Repeat this work as many times as desired. In the beginning, some phlegm watery distillate usually distills through the alembic. When it has distilled, close the beak with paper and continue the sublimation. From these flowers prepared in this manner,
distill water from honey using the gentle heat of ashes or a water bath. The water that comes out first is tasteless (that which follows is like sharp vinegar). Mix this with a portion of rectified spirit of wine and pour it over the flowers in a vial to the height of 4 fingers. Circulate the flowers in this manner in the Sun or another warm place for a month. Afterward, throw away the liquid, dry the flowers with gentle heat, and save them. You will see that the violence of the antimony flowers, which came from their rawness, has been cooked away and removed by the noble liquid. They move the bowels without any vomiting. The dose is from 5 to 6 or 7 grains.
Noble Flowers of Antimony that purge the bowels excellently on their own without stomach pains.
First, one makes an Aqua Regia Royal Water, a powerful acid in the following way: Take 4 pounds each of yellow calcined vitriol and common salt. Mix in two or three times as much potter's clay. Distill this from a coated stone retort over an open fire, and you will get a greenish water. In this water, dissolve as many white flowers of antimony as can be dissolved or as you please. Take care that the water or Aqua Regia is at least 7 to 22 times as much as the flowers. Let it digest and dissolve for three days. When it is dissolved, put everything, thick and thin, into a glass retort. Place it in sand or ashes and distill it—Note—gently at first until the moisture has mostly gone, which is to be caught in a separate vessel. As soon as thick, bright, shining drops fall and the previous liquid becomes doubtful, then put another clean vessel in front and distill whatever will come over from the dissolved flowers. The previous water can be poured back onto the remaining flowers, then digested, dissolved, and distilled again. The oil will thicken into crystals. If these are distilled once more from a small retort, the oil will be brighter and more beautiful. From this oil, take as much as you like and pour it drop by drop into an equal amount of oil of tartar made by liquefaction. Let this stand together for two or three days, then wash the flowers, which will be gentle and delicate. The dose for an adult is from 6, 7 to 10 and 12 grains.
However, if the oil were poured into distilled rainwater, beautiful white flowers fall down, which purge both upwards and downwards with benefit.
Preparation of Mercury with Gold.
XIII. Mercury with Gold. Take 1 part of fine gold and 6 parts of quicksilver. Make an amalgam a mixture of mercury and another metal according to the art. Allow the mercury to fly away from the amalgam over a gentle charcoal fire in a crucible; the Calx powder of Gold will remain at the bottom. Put this powder into a retort and pour aqua fortis nitric acid over it to the height of 3 fingers. Place the retort in a furnace for a day to digest with moderate fire. The next day, collect the aqua fortis in a receiver attached to the retort using a stronger fire. Increase the fire toward the end so the bottom of the retort glows red and all the corrosive spirits of the aqua fortis distill. When the vessels have cooled, remove the material, grind it, put it back into the retort, pour the previously distilled aqua fortis over it again, and distill again with a strong fire as before, so the bottom of the retort glows. When the vessels have cooled, remove the very red material contained in the retort, throwing away anything that might have stuck to the sides. Then take a square iron plate and hold it in the fire until it glows. When it is glowing well, sprinkle the mercurial powder on it so it dries thoroughly and any remaining volatile parts evaporate. When the iron begins to cool, remove the material and keep it in a closed vessel for use. It purges through the bowels slowly without any vomiting, unless the stomach or upper belly is filled with mineral impurities. The dose is from 3 to 8 grains with a little turpentine or extract of colocynth bitter apple. In the absence of these, use Pills of Cochia.
This is a supreme secret for dropsy, the French disease syphilis, all skin conditions, and runny humors, and where the body overflows with phlegmatic moisture.
Note: In the administration of mercury, however prepared, it should be noted:
1. The most convenient form of administration is pills, so the mercury does not cause harm in the mouth by causing ptyalism excessive salivation or swelling of the tonsils, as it naturally draws thinner humors to the palate.
2. When incorporating mercury, it is always advised to add a drop or two of oil of sulfur. This restrains its malignancy and fixes its volatility, as it tends to rise, and corrects the symptoms it causes.
3. At the latest, a broth should be given 2 hours after taking the mercury, and food half an hour after that, so it does not stay in the stomach too long.
4. It should not be given frequently to those of a bilious choleric or high-bile temperament, because by drawing out serous moisture, it could remove the restraint on the harms of the bile.
5. It should be given with turpentine or the following Extract of Colocynth: Take half a pound of colocynth, not fresh but kept for several years, without the inner seeds or husks. Take 3 drachms of pure scammony. Chop them and extract with spirit of wine. After rejecting the dregs, place the tinted liquid in a cucurbit and reduce it in a water bath to the consistency of honey or pills.
Medicines that induce sweating.
I. Simple Mineral Bezoar. Dose: 6 to 12 grains.
II. Solar Mineral Bezoar containing gold.
III. Lunar Mineral Bezoar containing silver, which is made this way: Silver is dissolved in aqua fortis and digested until the solution becomes greenish. Remove the aqua fortis through an alembic until it is like honey. Extract a green tincture from the silver with spirit of wine. Repeat this until it no longer tints. Once the spirit of wine is removed, join the remaining tincture in an eightfold proportion to butter of antimony dissolved in spirit of vitriol. Distill to dryness two or three times to fix it, in the same way simple mineral bezoar is fixed. The dose is the same.
IV. Diaphoretic Antimony or fixed white flowers of antimony. The dose is from 10 grains to half a drachm. Sometimes the glass is given with rose conserve or a suitable water and a small piece of old Theriac a famous multi-ingredient herbal jam used as an antidote. It drives out corrupt humors through sweat.
V. Panacea or fixed sulfur of antimony is made this way: From the Cinnabar of Antimony remaining in the neck of the retort after distilling butter of antimony, the first red sulfur is made. Make a very strong lye from potash pearl ash or quicklime. Boil the purified and powdered cinnabar of antimony with this lye for 3 or 4 hours in an iron pot. The lye becomes red because of the sulfur, while the quicksilver flows as liquid at the bottom. The tinted lye is separated by pouring and, while still hot, is filtered through paper and left for several hours. Thus, the sulfur of antimony will fall to the bottom in the form of a red powder. This must be washed with common water and dried with gentle heat. Take 1 scruple each of this sulfur and the Regulus the metallic part of antimony, 5 grains to 1 drachm of oil of sulfur or oil of vitriol. Digest for several days and nights in a glass retort in a warm place. Then distill from sand at least five times by cohobation pouring the distilled liquid back onto the solid residue. At the last time, increase the fire to the fourth degree for 12 hours. Everything will be fixed and remain in the fire. Remove it and wash with rose water. Mix 1 scruple or 1 drachm of this with 2 drachms of salt or Magistery of Coral a powder made from coral and make a powder. This is the Panacea.
