But the Serpent said unto the woman, "Nonsense, I assure you, this is only to frighten you and restrict the liberty and happiness you are capable of; you shall certainly not die.
For God knows the power of that tree very well, that as soon as you eat of it, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall become like gods, knowing good and evil."
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eye, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took the fruit and ate it, and gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they realized they were naked, and they were ashamed; therefore they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons to cover their private parts.
And the Lord God came into the Garden toward the cool of the evening, and walking in the Garden, called for Adam; but Adam had no sooner heard his voice than he and his wife ran away into the thickest part of the trees in the Garden to hide themselves from his presence.
But the Lord God called unto Adam a second time and said unto him, "Adam, where are you?"

Then Adam was forced to answer and said, "I heard your voice in the Garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and so I hid myself."
Then God said unto him, "Who has made you so wise that you should know you are naked or need any covering? Have you eaten of the forbidden fruit?"
And Adam excused himself, saying, "The woman whom you gave to me as a suitable helper, she gave me the fruit, and I ate it."
And the Lord God said unto the woman, "What is this that you have done?" And the woman excused herself, saying, "The Serpent deceived me, and I ate it."
Then the Lord God gave sentence upon all three; and to the Serpent he said, "Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattel livestock and above every beast of the field; and whereas until now you have been able to carry your body high and walk upright, you shall from now on crawl upon your belly like a worm, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
And there shall be a perpetual antipathy deep-seated hatred or opposition not only between the woman and you, but between her offspring and your offspring. For all of mankind shall abhor you and hate all the cursed generations that come from you. They indeed shall busily lie in wait to sting men's feet,"
