From my first Letter to D. Dominus, a formal title for a minister Vander Hooght, which is included here, it was plain to see that neither he nor other writers should expect any specific answer from me in the future. In that letter, I made it clear enough that I intend to use all such writings collectively, once they have been gathered together (as there was then only a beginning), in order to answer anything noteworthy within the work itself referring to his book, The World Bewitched against which they write, or to make corrections if they provide reason for it. This writer in particular, who calls himself Haggever Filalethes a pseudonym combining Hebrew and Greek roughly meaning "The Man who loves Truth", was already well-answered by three or four people—those whom some call "unlearned"—even in those matters where he most wished to show himself a scholar. Thus, I did not need to weary my pen for his sake. This is why he gives no other answer than to say they are not worthy of one. In this way, he escapes the matter most easily. Nevertheless, he continues with his writing, even producing an "Account of the proceedings" held against me since the case was settled, in order to make people believe that there is still much to be done. And since he declares on the other side of the title page that he composed the letters without the help of others, but conferred consulted or deliberated with others regarding that "Account," the Reader might think that the matters are truly as he relates them, and consequently receive a false impression.
