Respectful Reader. So that you may rightly understand what my aim is with this writing: I wish to inform you briefly of it herewith. Because I notice more and more that the state in which I find myself is generally understood differently than it truly is; and because of this, not only are new movements being made, but further proceedings concerning me are expected at the upcoming Synod a regional or national gathering of church leaders: these few pages serve to give the congregation the right account of the matter. Which consists in this: that I here maintain with the force of reason that my case has been completely settled by the Classis a regional governing body of pastors and elders of Amsterdam. One also need not have much concern over that general displeasure which is expressed in the name of other Church Councils local governing bodies of a congregation, Classes, and Synods: as it is actually only a few members who are stirring up the others by alleging things that are not so. At the same time, I reveal the cause and origin of all this activity, and I defend the Classis. With this, I intend to make impartial people understand that all that is further planned against me is unfounded and unlawful. I do not wish to diminish the Church Councils, Classes, and Synods in their right and esteem, in which these new disturbances are being made; when I, if necessary, bring to light the lack of moderation and the unseemliness of those movements stirred up among them by a few of their members. They shall always be treated by me with all due reverence, even if I do not stand under them: but I have often used the name of the assembly while looking at one or a few members; because they themselves do what they aim for in the name of their assemblies; yes, also (as is said) the assemblies themselves allow them to use their names in it. But as for such members who thus weary and misuse their bodies, and with them that of Christ himself: I have ten times more to say in regard to them than I have said; or also will say further, if they (though I have little courage for it) shall henceforth be able to rest. As for me, I seek rest: not as it is now; but as before, in peaceful labor in the Lord's field, to do it henceforth with joy, without sighing; expecting the entrance into the Rest that still remains for God's people, and with it into the joy of the LORD.
