Bekker, Balthasar · [1692]

it was not understood that the case should also be served there, since the Kerkenraad Consistory or Church Council was not yet finished with it; from where it had to be brought to the Classis a regional assembly of ministers and elders before it could even come to the Synodus Synod, a higher ecclesiastical assembly: nevertheless, I appeared unburdened. The Synod did even more. It appointed eight from its number who were also to examine the Book thoroughly. On Wednesday they received this charge, and by Thursday morning they were already done. That entire day, before and after noon, they spent with me; questioning me on various points of grievance which they had extracted from my Book. After the Synod had heard me, it delayed the Book as it lay: just as the Consistory had done before, before they had heard me. Regarding the Book, there was nothing more to be done than to take care that it should not be spread. Those who have this charge shall then have to be asked what has been performed by them in that regard. Furthermore, the Consistory was commanded to handle the case to its end: that was, how one should deal with me in view of that Book. However, they had to finish it in that month, of which three weeks still remained. And so as not to pass by the Classis, from which it would otherwise have had to come to the Synod: the Consistory would then bring the entire case to their knowledge; in order, if necessary, to do further therein as they should find appropriate. So it would then depend on the judgment of the Classis whether more remained to be done in the case or not. Thus the question further in the upcoming Synod shall be, whether the Consistory has done so? And the answer shall then have to be, Yes. However, if the Classis might find it necessary to do something further therein, they would perform that in two months, to begin from the time that the case was first brought to their deliberation; that is from the 3rd of September, when it was brought there by the Consistory. But because it had already served in the Synod, in the manner as has been said: it was the pleasure of the Assembly that four of its members should be authorized to be present; and that the case had to be finally original: "finalik" settled. It shall then further be asked whether that has happened? And it shall appear from the report of the Classis that the Consistory, when their time was at an end, brought the case into the Classis;
