Bekker, Balthasar · [1692]

... as the Synod itself had also presented to me, and having then only heard my bare declaration, now to convince me further; and thus with reason, as belongs to reasonable men, and specifically Christians, and moreover fellow servants of the same Lord Jesus, to bind me to improvement. The 5th of November was appointed to report back on what had been handled to the full Classis, again in the presence of the Synodal men. Who neither on the 1st of October complained in any way that they had been summoned too late for that transaction; nor on the second, that the day for the conclusion was set too far off; and that the 5th of November was beyond the two months within which they (taking the words of the Synod most strictly) had to help conclude the case. But they promised to come again on the appointed day, and they kept their word. Whether the delegates of the Classis had also sat still for those five weeks long appeared clearly from the fact that they gave the Classis work from the account of their proceedings, held orally and in writing with me for three days long. The Commissioners of the Synod themselves saw well that although it was now a full week beyond the two months in which they were limited; nevertheless the work was not yet to be finished: for they themselves helped me with new work; as they also helped to dreſſeeren draft or arrange, that is, reform and prepare, six Articles submitted by me for satisfaction, for me to consider for thirteen days, whether to accept them or not. They themselves came again to attend the end when that time had expired; that is three weeks outside or beyond those two months. But as the four delegates of the Classis had necessarily been hindered (not by me) from performing anything of importance with me in that short time, as they had been commanded; and gave sufficient reason for it to the assembly: those from the Synod did not find it good to proceed further with it beyond their time; which is why they took their leave from the Classis, which however, for reasons as stated, not yet being able to come to an end, took the proceedings, in the manner as prescribed, for two months longer: which still fell short enough, as was seen here before.
