...died in death, and lived in wild nature. The anxiety and shame that were revealed held them back, for they had played the harlot with the merchant for so long and led the souls of men astray. Yet they had boasted that they were engrafted into the Tree of Life and lived in divine power in holiness, and offered the fruit of life for sale.
58. Because their shame, deceit, greed, and malice were now made manifest, they fell silent and held back. They were ashamed to do penance for their abominations and idolatry, or to go with the hungry and thirsty to the fountainhead of eternal life. Therefore, they also fainted in their thirst, and their torment rises from eternity to eternity, and their conscience gnaws at them.
59. When the merchant with the false wares saw that his deceit had been revealed, he became very angry and despondent. He aimed his bow against the holy people who no longer wanted to buy his wares. He killed many of the holy people and blasphemed against the green branch that had grown out of the Tree of Life. But the Archangel Michael Who is like God, who stands before God, came and fought for the holy people and triumphed.
60. But when the Prince of Darkness saw that his merchant had fallen and his deceit was revealed, he stirred up a storm wind from the Midnight The North out of the wild tree against the holy people. The merchant from the Midday The South, often symbolizing the Roman Church in this period also stormed against them. Then the holy people grew very large and high in blood. Just as it was in the beginning, when the holy and precious tree grew and overcame the Grimmigkeit fierceness or wrath in nature and its prince, so it was also at that time.
61. When the noble and holy tree was now revealed to all people, so that they saw how it hovered over them all and extended its taste over all nations, and whoever wished could eat from it, the people grew weary of eating its fruit that grew on the tree. Instead, they lusted...
...to eat from the root of the tree. The clever and wise sought the root and quarreled over it. The dispute over the root of the tree became so great that they forgot to eat the fruit of the sweet tree because of the strife over the root.
62. However, they were not concerned with the root or the tree, for the Prince of Darkness had something else in mind. Because he saw that they no longer wanted to eat from the good tree but quarreled about the root, he saw clearly that they had become quite weary and weak, and that wild nature ruled in them again. Therefore, he moved them toward Hoffart pride or arrogance, so that everyone thought he held the root by the stem. They wanted others to look at them, listen to them, and honor them. With this, they built their palace-houses and secretly served the idol Mammon the personification of wealth and greed. Through this, the Layenstand laity was offended. They lived in the lusts of their flesh and the desires of wild nature. They served their bellies in luxury and relied on the fruit of the tree that hovered over them all, thinking they might become healthy again through it even if they fell into ruin. Meanwhile, they served the Prince of Darkness according to the impulse of wild nature. The precious tree only served as a spectacle for them. Many of them lived like wild animals and led evil lives in pride, splendor, and luxury. The rich consumed the sweat and labor of the poor and oppressed them further.
63. All evil deeds became good through gifts. Rights flowed from the evil quality in nature. Everyone strived for much money and property, for pride, gluttony, and ostentation. The wretched had no rescue. Scolding, cursing, and swearing were not considered vices. They felt themselves within the fierce quality like a sow in the mud. The shepherds did this with the sheep and kept nothing more than the name of the noble tree. Its fruit, power, and life had to be their SündenDeckel cover for their sins.
64. Thus the world lived at that time, except for a small little house that was born in the midst of thorns, in great tribulation and contempt, from among all people on earth from the Orient to the Occident. There was no distinction. They all lived in the impulse of wild nature, in impotence...
