water, it gives birth in the flesh to evil vapors, sores, Franzosen the "French disease," a historical term for syphilis, scabs, and leprosy. It becomes a house of mourning of death, a misery and forgetting of all good.
All of this, as told above, is called "quality" because it all qualificiret acts, interacts, and qualifies within one another in the deep above the earth, on the earth, and in the earth like one thing. And yet it has many kinds of power and effect, but only one mother from which all things come and well up. All creatures are made and have come from these qualities and live within them, as in their mother. Also, the earth and stones have their origin from this, and everything that grows from the earth lives and wells up from the power of these qualities. No rational person can deny this.
2. This twofold source, evil and good in all things, all stems from the stars. For as the creatures on earth are in their quality, so also are the stars. Through a twofold source, everything has its great mobility: running, racing, welling, driving, and growing.
3. The gentleness in nature is a quiet rest, but the fierceness in all powers makes everything mobile, running, and racing, and moreover, procreating. For the driving qualities bring desire into all creatures for evil and for good, so that everything desires one another, mixes, increases, decreases, becomes beautiful, perishes, loves, and hates.
4. There is in all creatures in this world a good and evil will and source: in humans, animals, birds, fish, worms, as well as in all that is there: in gold, in silver, tin, copper, iron, steel, wood, herbs, foliage, and grass. It is the same in the earth, in stones, in water, and in everything one can search out.
5. There is nothing in nature where good and evil are not inside. Everything wells and lives in this twofold drive, whatever it may be. Only the holy angels and the fierce devils are excluded, for they are decided; and each lives, qualifies, and rules in its own quality.
The holy angels live and qualify in the light in the good quality, in which the Holy Spirit rules. The devils live and rule in the fierce quality, in the quality of fierceness and wrath or destruction.
6. But they were both, evil and good angels, made from the qualities of nature from which all things have become. Only the "qualifying" is unequal in them.
7. The holy angels live in the power of the gentleness of the light and the kingdom of joy, and the devils live in the power of the rising or elevating source of fierceness, terror, and darkness. They cannot grasp the light, into which they have then thrust themselves through their own elevation, as I will write hereafter concerning the creation.
8. But if you will not believe that everything in this world stems from the stars, I will prove it to you. If you are not a blockhead and have a little reason, then mark what follows.
9. Firstly, look at the Sun. It is the heart or the king of all stars, and gives light to all stars from the rising to the setting. It illuminates everything and warms everything. Everything lives and grows in its power. Moreover, the joy of all creatures stands in its power.
10. Now, if the same were taken away, it would become entirely dark and cold. Also, no fruit would grow, nor could either man or animal multiply, for the heat would be extinguished, and the seed in everything would become cold and frozen.
11. If you wish to be a philosopher and a student of nature, and search out God's essence in nature, how all this is constituted, then ask God for His Holy Spirit, that He may enlighten you with the same.
12. For in your flesh and blood you cannot grasp such things. Even if you read it, it is only a vapor or darkness before your eyes. Only in the Holy Spirit, who is in God and also in all of nature from which all things have become, can you search even into the whole body of God, which is nature, as well as even into the Holy Trinity. For the Holy Spirit goes forth from the Holy Trinity and rules in the whole body of God, that is, in all of nature.
