his weakness in his last moments; as I was sorry he did not live to clear his honor by acknowledging he had acted wrongly in not returning the letters committed to his care, or acknowledging the truth they contained. I was answered concerning my own feelings for him, of love and pity; though I could not help blaming his conduct, yet still in my heart I felt a love for the man. I was told in response that the Lord’s feelings were the same—to pity his weakness and have mercy upon him.
I can only give the letter in part, as I did not keep a copy of the whole, not knowing it would ever be printed; but I was ordered to point out the following pages from the Explanations of the Bible, for people to form their judgment: from page 174—pages 249 to 256—pages 266 to 272—pages 280 and 281—and page 244. And the following passages:
Page 249.—“Here is a type that stands deep for man,
And * * * * * * must stand the Trial;
Or else the Trial, all will see,
Will be brought around to judge him;
Then how can he ever appear?
His honor he can never clear.”
Page 254.—“In justice he must now appear
To prove the truth was never clear,
If he will now free his honor.
He is surrounded, I now tell you,
To act in honor as a man;
Therefore he must stand the Trial.”
Page 270.—“Some will believe, and will not grieve
To see the end appear;
While others flee like * * * * * *
With trembling and with fear.
They’ll hear the end, mark how it does bend;
The ending now is come,
And * * * * * * in security
Thought all was gone from him.
But now he sees your end,
He cannot shun you here;
And the end will be exactly so,
When I appear in power:
They’ll find, like him, they cannot flee;
Their honor is lost in this way.”
Page 263.—“He must appear to clear the whole;
For I will never give him up.
I can never clear his honor,
If I let him drop now.
So he must stand as I command,
And all must stand the same:
All must claim his promise,
To appear to clear the whole;
For I shall go through all,
And as my Bible does appear;
All shall know the ending.”
Page 269.—“They mock my Bible as it is placed,
And so they mock their Lord;
Then they must fear when I am near,
As * * * * * *’s fears will be.
From types and shadows I [show]
How all will see the end.”
Page 254.—“And this is done by my command,
And so he must stand the Trial;
Then he shall fall to rise again,
If he comes forward to contend—
And proves his honor clear in all,
Before the woman he betrayed:
But when the truth bursts upon him,
He’ll find his honor rise higher
And see his standing more secure
Than it was before to endure;
Because his standing is by ME,—
The woman’s innocence shall free
Every fall that is in man,
Who will now stand the Trial boldly.
So, grieve no more for * * * * * *;
Can you believe your God is here,
But when the truth bursts upon him,
He’ll find his honor rise higher
And see his standing more secure
Than it was before to endure;
Because his standing is by ME,—
The woman’s innocence shall free
Every fall that is in man,
Who will now stand the Trial boldly.
So, grieve no more for * * * * * *;
Can you believe your God is here,"
