[Péladan, Joséphin] · 1893

An elaborate Symbolist title page border designed by Alexandre Séon, signed with his initials A.S. on the right. At the top center, a rose blossom containing a Latin cross is flanked by wide, outstretched feathered wings. Underneath these wings, two blocks of Latin text are hand-lettered. The central text is framed by an arch supported by two large Assyrian lamassu, which are winged bulls with human heads. Circular floral rosettes decorate the bottom corners.
original Latin: "Ad Rosam per Crucem, ad Crucem per Rosam; in ea in eis gemmatus resurgam." This is a central motto of the Rose-Croix, symbolizing spiritual rebirth through the union of the rose (nature/soul) and the cross (sacrifice/matter).
original Latin: "Non nobis non nobis Domine sed nominis tui gloriæ soli Amen." This is the traditional motto of the Knights Templar, taken from Psalm 115.
