I was raised in that faith and relied upon it. The love of God, which was in Christ Jesus, was deeply impressed upon my mind and heart, leading me to trust in Him for my salvation. But then I was visited by the Spirit of Truth. According to our Savior’s words in His Gospel, He said this Spirit would come to guide us into all truth and to teach us things to come. This is the Comforter spoken of, who comes at the end to call to our remembrance all things that were delivered to the saints and to warn of the fulfillment of the Scriptures.
I was warned that the time was drawing near when the Lord would fulfill His Gospel and the words delivered by the holy men of old—both the prophets and the apostles. Being warned that the time was approaching quickly for the Lord to fulfill their words opened a greater light to me. It gave me more reason to contend for the faith delivered to the saints than I had before; at first, I saw no further than my own salvation, until the revelation of the Spirit of the Lord came to reveal His will concerning our redemption and the fulfillment of the promises given to the saints. Now I shall turn to the Scriptures that show what we are to contend for.
2 Peter 3:2—"That you be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment from us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior." The same exhortation is given by Jude—"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write to you of the common salvation, it was necessary for me to write to you and exhort you that you should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints." Now I shall come to what was delivered to the saints and spoken by the holy prophets: that our Savior was prophesied of as the MESSIAH, who was to come first to suffer for the transgression of man. If we trace the prophets and the Psalms through, we shall find they agree together
