Five years to be [illegible]
appear? These things could not be fulfilled if everything had been finished and righteousness and peace established on the earth then. In that case, no one could have given it up, nor could anyone have fallen back, if everything had been established in so short a time.
But I spoke to you in that manner to bring men to the Scriptures. Know that I said the five years was a "type" type: a symbolic person, event, or object that prefigures a future reality that goes deep, and a glorious type for those who wish my kingdom were near. A "type" is a shadow of a "substance" that is to come; but when the substance arrives, types and shadows are done away with. So if the substance had come at that time, it could not be placed as a type of what should happen hereafter.
But know that I told you what should happen in the five years was a sign of the glorious end that would come to true believers when I have cut off all who mock the warning and my invitation. Then the words of the prophet Isaiah (chapter 11) will be fulfilled: "In righteousness shall I judge the poor, and slay the wicked who despise my warning." Then the wolf will lie down with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat.
These are types of men who are now like wolves, ready to devour; but when they are convinced and brought into my fold, then they will dwell together like lambs. And those who are like leopards because of sin—when they are cleansed from all unrighteousness and turn to me, I shall turn to them; then they will lie down with the young goat and the calf, and the young lion and the fattened animal together.
Speaking of these beasts uniting together—creatures that are usually so furious toward one another—becoming so tame and united that a little child may lead them, is meant to show mankind through types and shadows what the fury of man is compared to. It shows how nations are compared to beasts that would destroy each other; yet in the end, they will become as one sheep under one shepherd, and all lie down together.
