of God, who will make every crooked path straight before me.
Satan. In what way have you conquered? You are a liar.
Joanna. By not obeying a single command of the devil and by trusting in the God of my salvation, who is able to keep me from the Powers of Darkness.
Satan. Your God is a damned liar. He told you he would let Satan loose upon you, but he has not. Only his friends have come. You have not heard the voice of Satan yet, and he was allowed seven days.
Joanna. What a wretched, hardened spirit could speak that word, if not the devil? If Satan is not let loose, his friends are, and that is the same thing. Do not say the Lord is a liar, for he is the God of truth.
Satan. God is a liar, for he has deceived him and all mankind.
Joanna. How has the Lord deceived you, O Satan! Man must answer for himself whether the Lord has deceived those who have trusted in him. You answer for yourself, and I will answer for the Lord. He is a just, wise, holy, and merciful God. If he ever deceives man, it is only by being better than his promise. I will venture my whole soul upon the faithfulness and goodness of God.
Satan. I know what you want. You want to see some wondrous things from the devil before the ministers arrive, but I shall frustrate you there.
Joanna. It is lucky for me that your tongue is silent. You must confess you have nothing to say for yourself. You were at liberty to say anything for yourself if the Lord had not dealt justly with you by setting bounds for you, just as he did for man. If you break your bounds, you must be cast down just as man was cast down, with your crown downward. Thus you are at liberty to answer for yourself.
