using a fraction which, when calculated out, creates an infinite series. This will be shown clearly in the following chapters. Those who know the Arithmetic of Infinites the mathematical system invented by Dr. Wallis know that its entire application depends on accepting the idea of a last term in an infinite series. Dr. Wallis himself often calls the greatest term of an infinite series the last term.
I will only add one more thing. If the book by Aristotle called On Indivisible Lines had been studied by modern thinkers as much as it deserves, their theories of calculus and infinite series would not be as famous as they are now. This will be immediately obvious to anyone who understands that book and what I have written here.
John Ward also uses the phrase the last term in all his rules for adding up infinite series in the part of his book, The Young Mathematician's Guide, where he discusses the Arithmetic of Infinites.
