The first order of the Rosy Cross [...] Part 1

our Candidate at the Gate of the Mysteries are darkened for a time to symbolize the cloud that rests upon the Sanctuary of his Soul. The body of our Candidate is covered original: "enveloped" to represent the material burden original: "yoke" he carries in the World of Action while seeking the Home of the Spirit. He cannot walk alone; therefore, he depends upon our guidance. He will not be abandoned in his need. He will be brought safely and surely into the secret place of our Light. There is faith and hope in his heart, and that which leads him along the narrow way is the hand of love.

During this announcement, the Guide prepares the Candidate by performing the Rite of Washing original: "Rite of Lavabo", and then placing a blindfold original: "hoodwink" over his eyes and a black garment over his body. While this is being done:

Guide.—From a Temple of the Spirit, in the Name of GOD and His Light, I have come into the outer ways so that I may bring you into a deeper knowledge of the world within. By the Brotherhood at the heart of our Fellowship, I bid you remember that what begins here and now will find its completion original: "fruition" only when it ends in GOD. There is darkness over the eyes of the mind, but the mind shall enter into the day. The burden of the world is upon you, but the Soul shall enter into freedom.

The preparation being finished, the Guide gives a signal — —| — on the outer side of the Portal. The Doorkeeper original: "Ostiarius" replies — —| —

Doorkeeper (addressing the Brother Zelator).—Brother Zelator, there is a signal on the other side.

Brother Zelator.—Honorable Master of the Temple, the Mediator between Light and Darkness, the Guide of the Holy Paths, stands at the door and knocks.
